    The going rate for a VA is £25 or $25 minimum. If you are happy outsourcing to other locations, then do so at your own risk. I am part of a network of tens of thousands of VAs and we make a living out of fixing mistakes by these VAs (as well as our own work with people who value our time as experienced professionals). We regularly have to warn people who claim our prices are too expensive that by going with the cheaper ones you will most likely get someone who is not a native English speaker or someone who is working in the equivalent of a sweatshop working 16+ hours a day and getting paid very little of what the client actually pays for the service. Very disappointing to have someone promoting VA work with a $3 price tag.

      I agree. I can’t believe anyone would even consider $3 and hour as a sufficient pay rate for any hard working person. $3 a task maybe, if it only takes a couple of minutes to complete, but $3 (American) an hour is shameful in any country.

      I just want to stress on the point that most VAs who are charging 3$ an hour are just trying to afford a living and they would mostly be from countries that have huge currency differences like India Pakistan etc, so 3$ an hour would be considered a good price.

    This was a great list of services. I started my virtual agency last year and entrepreneurs love outsourcing and having an instantly reliable team. However, $3.00 an hour is way below minium wage and even low for overseas help. Many of the VAs in the Phillipines should be paid more especially if they are degreed or have high-level skills. Delegate away is what we say! But please take care of your people!

    It is quite surprising that a Web Developer will only cost an employer about $3 per hour. I believe that one must have advanced skills to do this job. In the Philippines, as far as I know, only data entry tasks are worth $3 per hour. Some are even as high as $5 per hour.

  • These jobs are not based in the US. They are in the Philippines. The average salary for college degree graduates in the Philippines is between 12,000 and 18,000 pesos per month which is $1.66 to $2.50 per hour. So $3 per hour is actually a higher level salary than the average graduate would receive.

    Good Morning.

    I’ll have to say that 3 USD is not even close to the hourly rate for Web Development. It doesn’t depend on the currency because these rates are always fixed in US Dollars to avoid confusion. The range of the hourly rates for Web Development (and many more tasks) goes from 10 USD to 50 USD and higher, depending on the complexity of the proyect.

    For the readers who haven’t out sourced before, there are a couple of things to keep in mind before you startt outsourcing. I’ve put them below:

    1. Before you hire them make sure you have good communication skills, prompt at responding & are good at following instructions.
    2. Before you trust someone with your work, give them a test project.
    3. Always give them CLEAR instructions.
    4. Don’t outsource a lot at a time. Give them small tasks to start with.
    5. Always pay them on time. This is important to keep them motivated to work hard on your projects 😀

      Anthony, I totally understand. For the longest time I hadn’t even heard of VAs but after I did I soon became aware of the stereotype of them being from Southeast Asia. Your intuition is actually pretty spot on. There are a lot of countries with low wages and good English skills. For example, I’ve been working for a while now as a content writer for a UK-based company called Remote Bob. Most if not all of our VAs work from Croatia, a country just as you’ve described: low wages, a good education system, and competent English speakers.

    I agree with Lee. After being in the corporate world for over 30 years, there is absolutely no way I would ever consider $3 per hour. I also disagree with comments about Web Development. You don’t need a degree to have the ability for that.

      These jobs are not based in the US. They are in the Philippines. The average salary for college degree graduates in the Philippines is between 12,000 and 18,000 pesos per month which is $1.66 to $2.50 per hour. So $3 per hour is actually a higher level salary than the average graduate would receive.

    Hi John. This is a very comprehensive post about the many things a virtual assistant can do. Thank you for the post and the putting out a good word for virtual assistants. However, I hate to see anyone post on the web about hiring a virtual assistant for $3 per hour. Most virtual assistants have spent a lifetime acquiring and honing the skills they have. Many have earned college degrees and have attended classes and workshops at night to be experts in their field. Speaking for myself, I deserve more than $3 per hour for any job I would do.! Other than the $3 comment, I enjoyed your post very much.
